Bally Technologies Speeds Application Development with Serena Software

Casino Systems Leader Foresees Faster Time-to-Market and Significant Cost Savings with Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) Solutions

SAN MATEO, Calif. — January 23, 2007 — Serena Software, Inc., the Change Governance™ leader, today announced that Bally Technologies, a leading provider of advanced gaming devices and software for the casino industry, has successfully deployed Serena Change Governance solutions to enable them to rapidly adapt software applications to meet customers’ changing business needs. Serena solutions enable Bally to quickly visualize, orchestrate, and enforce policies and processes throughout the entire application lifecycle, resulting in faster time-to-market with new products and significantly reduced costs. As the global casino systems market share leader, Bally Technologies relies on Serena for high-quality application development solutions.

Bally Technologies is using Serena® Composer and Serena Dimensions® RM to support the development of an enterprise accounting application and must deliver a new iteration of the application to customers every thirty days. “Serena has simplified and streamlined our development process, which will translate into significant cost savings,” said Ron Beck, director of software development for Bally Technologies. “With Serena, we now have an integrated suite of tools that can handle everything in our development process, from visual modeling to change management, requirements management, source code control, and test plans. If I need a snapshot at any given point, I can go to one place to see configurations, requirements, and test plans.”

With Composer, Beck was able to visually demonstrate a prototype application to business analysts. “It really helps to put a visual system in front of analysts early in the development process so they can see what they are getting. Any changes can be made on the fly, which saves time and ensures that the final product will meet customer needs,” he said. All requirements are uploaded to the Dimensions RM repository, saving time and eliminating errors associated with re-keying information. With Serena, Bally is able to quickly prototype and trace the requirements throughout the entire application lifecycle. Along with Composer and Dimensions, the company has also deployed Serena® TeamTrack® for issue and incident management, and Serena® PVCS® Version Manager™ for advanced version control.

Serena solutions integrate closely with other applications used by Bally Technologies, including Microsoft Visual Studio for development, Mercury Interactive TestDirector and QuickTest Professional for testing, and Microsoft .NET for support. The company’s need for tight integration between requirements, programming, and testing processes was a key driver behind its investment in Serena. “I wanted our developers to be able to access Visual Studio, Mercury or .NET applications without leaving the Serena environment,” said Beck.

“Leading companies like Bally Technologies are adopting Serena solutions because they see opportunities to manage and control change events in ways that can transform their businesses,” said Matt DiMaria, senior vice president of marketing, Serena Software. “With Serena’s integrated solutions for the entire application lifecycle, Bally Technologies’ IT department is delivering strategic value to the business.”
